About FoodHygieneScan

FoodHygieneScan is a free, independent service that makes UK food hygiene ratings easy to search, explore, and compare. We index every food establishment inspected by local authorities across England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland.

Data Source

All data is sourced from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) open data API, published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by the FSA.

How It Works

We regularly download and process the complete food hygiene ratings dataset from the FSA. This includes over 600,000 establishments, their ratings, inspection dates, and detailed scores. We also track 100+ major restaurant and retail chains, aggregating ratings across their locations.

Rating Schemes

FHRS (Food Hygiene Rating Scheme) is used in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Establishments receive a rating from 0 (Urgent Improvement Necessary) to 5 (Very Good) based on food handling, building condition, and management of food safety.

FHIS (Food Hygiene Information Scheme) is used in Scotland and provides a Pass or Improvement Required result without numeric scores.
